Prempeh.org 2007/08 Inter-Houses Athletics: Day 2 Report
Friday, February 29, 2008
The second day of the prempeh.org inter-houses athletic competition took off
amidst a lot of funfair as the seniors
were taking the center stage. It was expected to be a tough encounter and
so was it when the first contest took off. The triple jump
event was exciting as Frank Goloe of Opoku Ware House came out to represent
his house. Goloe, a sprinter for the college has now turned into a triple
jumper indicating how Opoku Ware house were bent on lifting the trophy.
Though he did well, he could not beat Ampadu Obuor Martin of Pearson house
but was able to beat Agyekum Vincent of Ramseyer house.
In the 110m hurdles,
Obuor made Pearson house once again proud as he beat Goloe for the second
time in the day while Isaac Mensah of Freeman house took solace in the third
position.
It was now becoming a one-man affair as Ampadu once again led the Pearson
charges to win the long jump. Sarfo Eugene of Aggrey house gave some joy to
the Aggreyans who hadn't impressed till then by winning the pole vault and
placing Kwame Koranteng and Julius Asare of Opoku Ware and Guggisberg to the
2nd and 3rd places respectively.
Ampadu Obour Martin was the toast of all the spectators present as he once
again won the javelin for Pearson house with the representatives of Opoku
Ware house and Freeman, Annor Andrew and Isaac Mensah settling for the 2nd
and 3rd places respectively.
Aggrey house made mince meat of the shot putt
as the first to the 3rd positions were won by their men while Opoku Ware did
the same for the discuss winning all the three top positions.
To the track events and Frank Goloe showed why he is called the "don" as he
won the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Nketia Stephen, Yeboah Solomon,
Asubonteng Prince and Ansah Raymond all trailed behind him.
The 800m race was won by Elijah Dapaah who also won the 1500m race and gave
the second and third positions to Pearson's Joseph Trezeguet, last year's
Ashanti cross country champion. Trezeguet, an
outstanding long distance runner who is renowned in Ashanti Region was non-existent in this year's
prempeh.org inter-houses causing people to ask so many questions about his
stamina but he somehow proved his critics wrong by placing second in a
keenly contested 5000m race which was won by Akuka Williams of Aggrey house
while Elijah Dapaah also of Aggrey came 3rd.
Aggrey house led by Elijah Dapaah easily won the 4 by 400m race when they
beat Opoku Ware and Butler house to it but the last contest of the day had
Frank Goloe -- junior brother of the departed Ghana's fastest youth Eric Goloe -- making every one scream and yell as he led his house to win the
4 by 100m race.
In the end, Aggrey House, who has taken the second position behind the seemingly indomitable Opoku Ware House boys for 2005/06 and 2006/07, emerged victorious, while the Opoku Ware boys
placed second. Last year's third place winners, Pearson took the same position again. And Serwah House, as always, was last.
This was the first time the competition has been offered in the second term. Renovation of the Prempeh field through out last term ahead of the just ended African Cup of Nations ensured that we could not hold our annual event until the Cup of Nations ended on February 10. Prempeh's grounds served as training site for several of the tournament's participating teams.
