Prempeh College made it to the next round of the Ashanti Regional Milo
soccer competition yesterday as they played away from home at the Kumasi
Girls secondary school park. The Milo ssoccer competitions has been played
throughout last week at the premises of Prempeh College but the group
matches which involved Prempeh were played at Kumasi Girls.
Prempeh College was wary of the opposition as Mr Lartey lamented the poor
physique of his boys a day before the tournmanent. The school team has been
made dreary with the exit of star players like Okei, Otoo, Ahmed, Goloe to
mention but a few. Through the introduction of the prempeh.org inter-house
soccer league, however, the sports master was able to get talents to fill in the
vacant positions left in the team.
With majority of these players in the form one class and thus very young
and feeble, the coach was left with no other option than to make them fit
and strong for the task ahead. The coach did a lot to make sure the boys
were really prepared for the games ahead but a lot still needs to be done.
Prempeh College played two matches with the first one being a game against
Barekese Sec Tech school. Though Prempeh dominated the game and had a lot
of the ball possession, the goals were not coming as Charles Brenya's
strength was no where near the brawn of the centre-backs of Barekese
Secondary. It took a long range shot from the foot of the ace captain, Paul
Manu to close the game in the early stages of the second half.
Mr. Lartey described the game as a bad one as the Barekese guys came to
play "karate or taekwando" and not soccer.
In the second game, Prempeh College beat Nkawie Secondary school by a goal
to nil with the only goal of the match coming from the man who suffered
the bad tackles of the boys from Barekese. Charles Brenya squandered a
lot of chances but made no mince meat of a one-on-one encounter with the
goalkeeper of Nkawie Secondary. Charles dribbled past the goal keeper to
fetch the winner for the gentlemen.
Prempeh College played only two matches instead of the 3 because only 5 of the
scheduled 6 schools in the group turned up. Prempeh thus move into the
next stage of the competition from their group with schools like Kumasi
Academy, Kumasi High and Opoku Ware who made it to the next stage through
a penalty shoot-out.
