Crushing our only remaining hope

Saturday, July 21, 2007

The Soccer team had stopped training altogether with the exception of some of the players who play with some teams around. Those who are not in any team do not report for training because they have been seriously warned that should they fail to meet the pass mark, they will be withdrawn from the College without any consideration.

They were of the view that they are not prepared to sacrifice their academics for training sessions. They said that if they were to go for training while their mates studied, they were definitely not going to do well in the exams and this would attract more harassment from the teachers.

Others said they want to also become proud Amanfoo in the near future. Moreover, recently whenever they go for training, no food is reserved for them at the Dining Hall and they always have to go through a tough time before getting food to eat. It has been 3 consecutive years since sports boys started suffering from starvation, a putrid legacy of Mr. Owusu-Achiaw, who appointed the worst Senior Housemaster in Prempeh history.

It was also learnt that some of them have started looking for schools elsewhere should they be withdrawn from the College.

Some known schools have also started hunting for some of our players and are baiting them with better incentives. The Coach of one of these schools is said to be in talks with some of the players just that they are resolved to remain in the green shirt.

Utterances and threats from some of the teachers -- another putrid legacy of Owusu-Achiaw -- have also not helped matters. The players are allegedly disgraced in front of their other colleagues. Their rebates for staying in the boarding house have also been allegedly withdrawn by the College and from next term, any of them who would want to continue staying in the boarding house will have to pay the full boarding fee.

They are calling for an urgent meeting between the Old Boys, the Sports Committee and the Headmaster so that their grievances could be resolved. If this is not done, some of them might find their way into other schools with Santasi as one of the most likely places instead of returning to Sofoline to play in the Regionals Soccer Competition. Our Coach has however traveled to Nigeria and was not available for comments.

The soccer boys were featured in a video interview on this website in which they appealed to the headmaster to reduce the "50% passing mark" for their sake since they spend too much time on the field training. Prempeh requires that each student maintains a 50% average for promotion. The very day the video appeared here, OWASS sports master, who has much lower standards, approached our boys and invited them to transfer to OWASS, where he will let them go up with only a 20% mark.

Science Quiz contestants had their dream crushed; now the football team, our only remaining hope is falling apart because of mismanagement. When will this Headmaster get anything right?
